There is not such a cradle of democracy upon the earth as the Free Public Library, this republic of letters, where neither rank, office, nor wealth receives the slightest consideration. ~Andrew Carnegie

7 Excellent Reasons to Support the Woodland Public Library

1. We are your library - the Library belongs to the city residents. We believe no one should be denied information because he or she cannot afford the cost of a book or periodical, have access to the internet or information. (Source: American Library Association)

2. We're a place to learn - the Library promotes lifelong learning. There's no age limit at the library and all are welcome to browse and borrow. The Woodland Library recognizes that education never stops and learning should be available no matter your religion, heritage, race, physical ability or background.

3. We save you money in hard times "The average annual cost to the taxpayer for access to this wide range of resources is about $31, the cost of one hardcover book. In good times or bad, libraries are a great value!” (Source: American Library Association) Students can find dozens of material for sources whether they're writing a paper or creating a project instead of paying hundreds of dollars in a given school year.

4. We are an important part of Woodland History - Andrew Carnegie funded 2,509 libraries between 1883 and 1929 and the current site of the Woodland Public Library has been in operation for 105 years. For over a century the Library has loaned books to students, residents, parents and friends for research, pleasure reading and reference.

5. We are busy supporting YOU - Over 200,000 visitors a year in one building have access to 100,000+ items and 52% of Woodland residents hold a library card. Our computers are used 31,000 times a year to research homework, connect with family and look for jobs (this is NOT counting the 1000's of students and residents who use the free wi-fi weekly).  We have 175 different programs annually hosted by the Library.

6. We support local schools - did you know the library staff answers 7,200 requests for homework help every year? There's a summer reading program for children too. And 19 public access computers for your use.

7. We provide materials you request.  There is over $5 million in free resources at the Woodland Public Library.  The library's collection has much more that books.  Ther are magazines and newspapers, books on CD for your next car trip and music CDs also.  We even have books in Braille!  We take donations and constantly update the stacks to include the most recent releases and donated materials.

6 Ways the Library Saves You Money

1. Browse before you buy - even if you're interested in purchasing a book the library can save you money. Check it out first to be sure this is the right book for you and save the time and expense of buying the wrong book.

2. Order online - you can easily reserve material from the Woodland and partner libraries from home, saving a trip downtown. There's never any charge for shipping or borrowing.

3. Drive less, save more - gas prices are creeping up again and the Woodland Library saves you a trip to Sacramento or Davis for reading material. Even if you order books online and have them shipped you'll pay shipping - usually $4 an item. Each book you borrow from the Library will put money back in your pocket.

4. Find a frugal hobby - thinking about a summer garden or learning to bake bread? How about wood working or learning the mechanics of your car? The library has a variety of resource books you can check out to try your hand at saving money.

5. Fun for the whole family - from craft events and reading hour for children to tax forms, the Woodland Library is here to serve the community. Whether you need help with reading or finding a book, the talented library staff is willing and able to help.
